A Delphi Suspect Drew This on His Hand and the Jury Never Heard a Word About It

Richard Allen's appeal of his Delphi murders conviction was argued on September 21, 2026, and one stretch of it was about a hand. Not Allen's. The hand belongs to Brad Holder, a man Indiana State Police investigated in 2017 who has never been charged, and what he drew on it is something the jury that convicted Allen never saw.

Mark Leeman, arguing for Allen, laid it out for Judges Vaidik, Brown, and Altice. Holder was flagged by two tips in March 2017. Police cleared him on a time card from the landfill where he worked.

After that, Leeman said, state police received a rune Holder had drawn on his hand and shared, and Leeman argued its shape lines up with the sticks placed on Abby Williams. He described social media posts of girls lying as if dead with sticks on them, and an officer who asked to reopen Holder's file and was told the department had already cleared him.

Judge Frances Gull ruled all of it inadmissible before trial. Indiana requires a direct connection between a third party and the crime, and the state told the appeals panel that the evidence showed the opposite. Holder, by the state's account, was 25 miles away at work in Buffalo, Indiana, at every moment that mattered, and a landfill clerk said his absence would have been noticed. The state's expert saw no runes in the sticks, and the defense's own ritual expert could name no symbol.

Defense attorney Bob Motta and I walk through what Leeman said the crime scene took, moved bodies, changed clothes, balanced sticks, and why he told the judges that doesn't describe a pharmacy tech on a walk. Then we take the state's answer seriously and ask whether a time card can carry that much weight.

Allen is serving 130 years for killing Abby Williams and Libby German. The appeal is under advisement.
