Christa Pike’s Execution Doctor Did WHAT Four Months Earlier?!

Four months before Christa Pike’s execution attempt on September 30, the same doctor overseeing her lethal injection failed to execute Tony Carruthers. The state of Tennessee knew that — and sent him into the chamber anyway.

Dr. Mark Fowler is a sixty-eight-year-old family medicine doctor from Union City, Tennessee. He holds no current hospital privileges. In a 2025 deposition, he testified he hadn’t placed a central line — the critical backup procedure in the execution protocol — in over thirteen years. He said he didn’t even know the protocol required it until the prisoners’ lawyers told him.

On May 21, 2026, Fowler tried and failed to place a central line in Carruthers’ chest. A witness said his hands were shaking. Carruthers’ family says he’s been left partially paralyzed. The governor gave Carruthers a one-year reprieve.

Multiple inmates tried to get Fowler removed. Pike filed court papers in August about his qualifications. The state argued his qualifications were “not important or relevant.”

On September 30, the IV team stuck Pike at least seven times. One needle bent at ninety degrees. She received two full doses of pentobarbital. She was breathing and snoring after the drugs went in. She’s on a ventilator.

According to scholar Austin Sarat’s data, lethal injection fails at a higher rate than every other execution method the country has used — 7.12 percent, climbing closer to 8. Every major medical organization bans participation, so states use paramedics, phlebotomists, and in some cases corrections employees. Drug companies have blocked their products, so states buy from compounding pharmacies under secrecy laws.

The cycle feeds itself. More failures drive more qualified people away. Less oversight produces less accountability.
