Christa Pike Put Tennessee on Notice About THIS

Before Tennessee tried to execute Christa Pike for the 1995 murder of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer, Pike's lawyers put the state on notice in open court. Their January lawsuit identified a blood condition and small veins that they said would make an IV line hard to place and could fill her lungs with bloody froth. They offered an alternative: a 23-gauge butterfly needle, placed by trained medical staff. Tennessee's lawyers answered that blood draws had worked fine, her platelet levels were not a clotting problem, and pentobarbital works faster than pain.

Two doses went in on September 30. Pike was still breathing.

Her attorneys allege the lines failed and the drug leaked into surrounding tissue, injuring both arms. The Department of Correction says it followed its protocol step for step. On October 7 a Chancery Court judge ordered the state to preserve every physical item and every communication connected to the attempt, after Pike's lawyers argued they cannot prove what went wrong without the state's own records in hand.

Defense attorney and former prosecutor Eric Faddis joins Tony Brueski on the protections Pike's team should be demanding, what a second attempt would require, and what the strongest case looks like for commuting her sentence to life without parole.
