The prosecution put the lead investigator on Sandra Birchmore’s death on the stand for more than six hours in the Matthew Farwell federal murder trial. What the defense drew from him on cross confirmed what the prosecution spent all day building.

Trooper Dunne told defense attorneys there were no signs of a struggle. No forced entry, no scuff marks, no boot prints. But this is the investigator the prosecution showed hadn’t examined whether items on Sandra’s floor had been displaced.

The defense raised Sandra’s mental health history and a Zoloft prescription dated eleven days before she died. Dunne testified the investigation was more focused on the Birchmore side of things.

Farwell, a former Stoughton police detective, is charged with killing Sandra to prevent her from reporting to federal authorities about a relationship prosecutors say began when she was fifteen. More than three years passed before federal prosecutors charged him.
