The defense had its say this week as opening statements continued in the Lindsay Clancy murder trial. Clancy, 34, of Duxbury, Massachusetts, is accused of strangling her three children — 5-year-old Cora, 3-year-old Dawson, and 7-month-old Callan — with exercise resistance bands inside the family's Summer Street home on January 24, 2023. She faces three counts of murder and three counts of strangulation, and has pleaded not guilty. Attorney Kevin Reddington is arguing an insanity defense, centered on claims of severe postpartum psychosis and psychiatric overmedication.

Reddington's opening leaned hard into character and context: a good nurse, a great mother, a woman who recognized something was wrong and reached out for help with her postpartum struggles before the tragedy happened. That's a very different story than "premeditated," and it's the one the defense needs jurors to hold onto through weeks of clinical and forensic testimony. The gap between those two narratives — deliberate killer versus desperate, undertreated patient — is what this entire trial is actually about.

After the killings, Clancy allegedly attempted to take her own life by jumping from a second-story window, an act that left her paralyzed from the waist down. Her husband, Patrick Clancy, was out of the home running errands when it happened and has since relocated to Manhattan, where he's spoken publicly about her mental health. The trial, presided over by Judge William F. Sullivan, is expected to stretch across several weeks.
