A Massachusetts State Police trooper walked the jury through the hours after Lindsay Clancy arrived at South Shore Hospital today, and it sounded less like a hospital admission and more like a custody transfer. Clancy, 34, of Duxbury, is on trial for the January 24, 2023 deaths of her three children — 5-year-old Cora, 3-year-old Dawson, and 7-month-old Callan — allegedly strangled with exercise resistance bands inside the family's Summer Street home. She faces three counts of murder and three counts of strangulation, has pleaded not guilty, and her attorney Kevin Reddington is running an insanity defense built on claims of severe postpartum psychosis and psychiatric overmedication.

Trooper Dan Lawlor testified he served an evidence preservation order at the hospital and personally collected Clancy's clothing and jewelry, along with additional evidence. On cross, he confirmed she arrived without shoes. Then came the line that reframes the whole scene: Lawlor said he was stationed there to "maintain custody" of Clancy, which meant no visitors — not her lawyer, not anyone — until a court order allowed a psychiatrist in to see her. A hospital room, sealed off by court order. Sit with that for a second.

Prosecutors maintain Clancy understood what she was doing regardless of her mental state. Clancy allegedly attempted suicide after the killings by jumping from a second-story window, leaving her paralyzed from the waist down. Her husband, Patrick Clancy, was running errands at the time and has since relocated to Manhattan. The trial continues in Plymouth Superior Court and is expected to run several weeks.
