Lindsay Clancy's Therapy Sessions Were Only WHAT?

Lindsay Clancy spent her career as a labor and delivery nurse. That background may be exactly why the people treating her took her at her word — and it's one of the threads Tony Brueski and psychotherapist Shavaun Scott pull apart in this conversation about the case. 
Clancy has pleaded not guilty to three counts of first-degree murder after her three children died at home in Duxbury in January 2023. Her defense doesn't dispute what happened — it argues postpartum psychosis and bipolar disorder made her not criminally responsible. Prosecutors call the killings intentional and rational. 
Shavaun, a licensed psychotherapist with three decades in trauma and the psychology of violence, explains what postpartum psychosis actually is: how it differs from psychopathy, how an intrusive thought differs from a voice giving commands, and how someone this ill can still present as organized and in control. Research puts the condition at roughly one or two cases per thousand births. 
From there the conversation moves to the clinicians who treated Clancy in the months leading up to the killings — the psychiatrist who cleared her for release from the hospital, and the outpatient provider who saw her by video through the fall and into January. What each of them later admitted under oath about their own experience with this condition, and about how those sessions were actually structured, is where the episode lands hardest. 
Shavaun also gives credit where it's due — one provider in this story did something that may have mattered more than any diagnosis. 
Clancy attempted suicide the day her children died and now attends her trial in a wheelchair. Whether her illness reaches the legal standard for criminal responsibility is a question for the jury — this episode is about everything that happened before that question ever got asked.
