Jury selection in the Matthew Farwell trial began October 6 in Boston, and the first fight is over one doctor. Sandra Birchmore's medical examiner ruled her 2021 death a suicide, then changed it to undetermined in April 2026. Prosecutors want her on the stand to explain both rulings, and so does the defense.

Farwell, a former Stoughton police detective, has pleaded not guilty. Prosecutors say he strangled Sandra on February 1, 2021, to keep her from reporting a relationship they say began when she was 15. The defense says he went there to end it and that she took her own life after he left.

Tony breaks down the neck bone the government says a seated hanging couldn't break, the defense pathologist who can't rule hanging out, the mental-health history Judge Denise Casper allowed because the defense's entire case rests on it, and the phone consent fight that reopened days before trial.
